    Brief Profile: Dr. Gopala Krishnan S, Principal Scientist (Plant Breeding) at the Division of Genetics, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi has made noteworhty contributions towards basic and applied research in rice genetics, molecular mapping and molecular marker assisted breeding. He has been associated with the development and release of Improved Pusa Basmati 1, the first rice variety developed through molecular marker assisted breeding India. He has also been involved as a team member in the development and release of five other Basmati rice varieties, Pusa Basmati 1509, Pusa Basmati 1609, Pusa Basmati 1637, Pusa Basmati 1728 and Pusa Basmati 1718; and two aromatic long slender grain rice varieties, Pusa 6 (Pusa 1612) and Pusa 1592. In basic research, he has made significant contribution through his involvement in mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for grain and cooking quality characters in Basmati rice,development of a high throughput screening method for screening and identification of resistance sources to Bakanae disease, mapping QTLs for resistance to Bakanae disease; mining novel alleles determining grain size in short grain aromatic rice landraces from India, development of genomic resources in rice for marker assisted breeding. He has been involved in molecular marker assisted breeding through incorporation bacterial blight (BB) and blast resistance genes into popular Basmati rice varieties, Pusa Basmati 1121 and Pusa Basmati 6 as well as the parental lines of Pusa RH10 namely, PRR78 and Pusa 6B through marker assisted breeding. He has also contributed in development and registration of 12 genetic stocks in different crops namely rice, guar and mung bean.

    He has been awarded Lal Bahadur Shastri Outstanding Young Scientist Award 2015 (ICAR), Dr RS Paroda Yong Scientist Award 2014 (ISPGR) for research contributionsand is an Associate of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhisince 2016.
